"I have had Cartilage damage and constant knee pain since my teens as a result of my poorly feet. After having an assessment and orthotics form Ian I now get hardly any pain and the cartilage damage is on the mend!".

Arthritic Knees and progressively flattening feet

Mrs A Clarke had been suffering right knee pain linked to her flattening right foot. She had been suffering with this pain for at least six years prior to her visit and it was getting worse! She was already using insoles which made the arch of her feet hurt and produced callused hard skin.

"My Physiotherapist referred me to see Ian Sadler when my knee pain kept getting worse despite her treatment and my orthotics. I had tried many different insoles and none gave me the support I needed. After my appointment with Ian I felt much more confident that something could be done to help my knees and not hurt my feet. Ian prescribed me insoles (orthotics) that fitted comfortably in my shoes but more importantly supported my feet. I have seen him on several occasions over the past four years and even after my leg was broken in an accident, Ian has been able to re-jig my insoles to keep me comfortable. Before I met Ian I couldn't walk very far at all and although I will always have a problem, my feet are comfortable and my knees are less painful than they have been in years"

Although Mrs Clarke's Knees have been permanently damaged by her Arthritis we have been able to make her much more comfortable and she can now do all the walking she needs to. We review her every eighteen months to make sure she always has the best prescription orthotics for her condition. In this way she should not require a knee replacement.

Rehabilitation after an Achilles tendon rupture

Mrs Van Kleek

"About 10 years ago, I ruptured my left Achilles tendon whilst playing tennis. This resulted in an operation to join the two ends of my tendon back together. Following this operation I spent several months in plaster up to my knee, which were renewed every few weeks in order to alter the ankle of my foot and lengthen the tendon."

"Eventually the last plaster was removed and followed by months of physiotherapy and exercises to strengthening my foot and leg. My Physiotherapist then recommended using an orthotic in both my shoes to encourage a straighter tendon. As I am slightly bow legged and flat footed she felt this had been a significant contribution to the Achilles rupture. She felt this would help protect my left Achilles and avoid a similar problem in my right foot."

"I did not find the orthotics I was first prescribed entirely satisfactory and was searching in the internet one day when I came across Ian Sadler's revolutionary biomechanics clinic."

"I arranged a consultation with Ian and was very impressed with his thorough examination of my feet, leg, gait and his surveys of my walking up and down a rubber mat attached to a computer. Ian was then able to very accurately produce a set of orthotics for me, one set for wider shoes like trainers and walking boots and one set for narrower dress shoes."

"Since using these orthotics, on a daily basis, I have has no pain and 10 years down the line, have had no reoccurrence of tendon problems. The orthotics have given me the confidence to be able to carry out any activity such as running, walking my dog, skiing, golf and yoga without the worry of damaging my tendons again."

"I have had several follow up sessions with Ian and can only recommend his attention to detail and his quest to provide a pain-free existence. In fact my whole family are now using orthotics, not because they ruptured a tendon, but because the orthotics realign the foot, knee and hip which should avoid them having problems with their gait in future."

Mrs Van Kleek attends every two years for a check up. We make sure the orthotic prescription is optimal for her feet and biomechanics, and the activities and footwear that contribute to her quality of life. We have also seen her two sons and daughter to screen them against any genetic disposition to future injury and again review them periodically as they grow and develop to ensure that the orthotic is the optimum prescription for them.

Arch pain

Mrs Ruth JohnsonMrs Ruth Johnson, attended the Norfolk Biomechanics clinic after suffering a "locking feeling" in her left foot for years. It had been seriously limiting the amount she could walk.

We found that she was overusing her Spring ligament (a structure that limits the amount your ankle can roll in and helps to hold your arch).

"I am now aged 62, and I live in Suffolk with my husband. My days are filled with being a busy housewife and grandmother."

"I have had very flat feet all of my life, even as a child my parents tried to get me some help. As a teenager and young woman, I had trouble finding shoes. By the time I was in my forties, I developed other problems. I suffered with back and calf pain, swollen ankles and numbness after long days on my feet."

"Before attending an appointment with the Norfolk Biomechanics Clinic I had tried the following;

1999 I visited a Chiropractor as it was thought the trouble was coming from my back.

2002 Saw a Chiropodist/Podiatrist and tried different things with my shoes.

2004 Physiotherapist. I Tried exercise and was referred to hospital.

2004 West Suffolk Hospital Orthopaedic Dept.

All the above were of little or no help and my symptoms persisted."

"I heard about Norfolk Biomechanics through a friend. I made an appointment and was seen within a couple of weeks. The examination included a walking assessment and was efficient and friendly."

"It was felt I would benefit from Orthotics to wear in my shoes. These were made specifically for my feet. They have been a great success and are very comfortable. I wear them up to 12 hours a day, and they fit into all of my shoes. These are what I now call "My New Feet" and I would not go out without them. No pain and no swelling just comfort. GREAT!!"

We were able to identify the reason Mrs Johnson's feet were flattening and putting stress on her arch ligaments. An orthotic was prescribed to slow down the roll in of her ankle and augment the function of her Spring Ligament. As Mrs Johnson lives in Suffolk we were able to send her insoles directly to her, and after a few light aches and pains while getting used to the insoles she has responded well and can now walk as much as she needs too.
